Locally-owned, not chain or franchise, stores open and close all the time. Often, without anyone even noticing. They don't have national or regional brand recognition, they don't have piles of advertising money, they don't have a lot of word-of-mouth even... because they're small. And in 6 months, maybe a year, they're gone.

So let's investigate! In your local area, whether you consider that your city, general area, only your part of town, etc., let's find 5 places that are locally-owned or that are unique to your area.

• An alternative to Starbucks (or other chain coffee shop)

• A local farmer's market or vegetable stand

• A 'weekend market', even if it's only for one season a year. This is the kind of event where lots of different sellers come together for a set number of hours, often 1-2 days a week, for only a few months.

• An ice cream or dessert shop

• A cheap lunch spot, whatever that average budget is for your area.

• ALTERNATIVELY, is there a spot unique to you, like the Shell Factory (now closed) down in Ft. Myers, or Sunken Gardens in St. Pete, FL?

Do you have plans to visit any of these places, even just to try their fries or a sandwich, instead of giving Burger King or McDonald's that $5? Have you been to any of them before? Do any of your favourites have an Etsy shop or a website?
